Changing to Vonage could leave your house unprotected from fire!

Like many of the millions of people who are getting rid of their expensive landlines, hooking up with Vonage and routing all their calls through DSL, my wife and I joined the Vonage revolution not realising that it would lead to leaving our house and family unprotected for 6 months from fire and theft.

I have an ADT fire and alarm system and didn’t realise that if I dissconnected my landline and went to Vonage my ADT system wouldn’t function anymore. I’m not annoyed with Vonage, I’m sure there was a warning in their contract, however, I’m really upset with ADT for not calling and informing me on my back-up number (cell phone) that we were not being monitored anymore.

For six months they quite happily continued to take money from our bank account while we thought that we were protected from theft and even more importantly, my two daughters were safe in their beds and we could be warned in the event of a fire.

The reason I knew there was a problem was when my house filled with smoke after a cooking/burning moment in the kitchen; the smoke detectors remained silent while the smoke billowed through the house.

To rectify the problem, I either have to restore my expensive landline or pay ADT $295 to fit a ‘device’ which will route the monitoring calls through my cell phone. I’m doing neither, as I feel ADT have ripped my family off and left us unsafe for six months. Instead, I think I’ll go out and buy several smoke detectors and a shotgun! I’m sure they’ll do just as god a job as the ADT system.

Seriously though, I can imagine there are thousands of people who have had the same problem who didn’t read the small print of their Vonage or ADT contracts.

    Great post.
I was considering switching to vonage or any other digital phone service, however I was also curious as to how I could make sure that ADT is still being notified of breakins etc.
I have read that ADT also provides a solution with a wireless notified or something. However, isn’t there a way to connect ADT to vonage?
the only problem I see that if it is possible, then Vonage since it is internet can be down sometimes…so sometimes ADT could nto be notified if the internet is down.

    what do you think?

  2. You can upgrade to cellular back up then the voip line doesn’t matter.
