Give a little, get a little more
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa or Hanukkah, December is the month for gift-giving. If you have a little extra room in your heart and money in your wallet while you’re shopping online for friends, families and co-workers, perhaps you’ll consider a charitable donation as well. (For totally unselfish reasons of course, but it is also your last chance before 2007 tax season!)
Here are three interesting organizations for you to consider:
Kiva.org — Kiva.org has received a lot of interesting press over the last two months from Oprah Winfrey to Forbes Magazine. I heard about Kiva earlier this year on a CBC Radio podcast I download regularly from iTunes. With a goal of helping the world’s poor achieve economic independence, Kiva connects lenders with unique small businesses in developing countries. You receive updates from the businesses you sponsor throughout the course of your loan. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back. An interesting factoid: 99.7% of Kiva’s loans are repaid in full.
PajamaProgram.org — The Pajama Program delivers warm p.j.’s and books to kids in major U.S. cities and other countries who are living in temporary quarters while waiting for adoption. The Pajama Program delivered two truck loads of pajamas to kids in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Taproot Foundation — Got talent but no money? Check out Taproot Foundation, an organization that matches marketing professionals with nonprofit organizations for pro bono projects. Volunteers are currently needed for projects in New York, Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston.
Happy Giving!
